Abstract swirl nails are the low-commitment art project everyone can pull off. There's no perfection required — the wobblier the line, the more charming the design. This tutorial uses three soft pastels on a milky base, but the technique works with any palette you already own.

What You'll Need

  • Milky white or nude base polish
  • Three pastel polishes (lavender, peach, sky blue suggested)
  • Fine liner brush or the tip of a striping brush
  • Fast-dry glossy top coat
Tutorial

Step-by-Step

  1. 01

    Build the base

Two thin coats of milky polish. Let dry fully — swirls need a stable surface.

  2. 02

    Draw the first swirl

Dip the liner brush in your first pastel and paint one continuous curved line across the nail. Don't overthink it — organic feels intentional.

  3. 03

    Layer the second color

Repeat with a second pastel, crossing the first line in one or two places. Vary the direction on each nail so no two look alike.

  4. 04

    Add accent dots

Use the third color to place tiny dots at the ends of some lines. This softens the composition.

  5. 05

    Seal with gloss

Once fully dry, one coat of glossy top coat brings it all together.

"Great nails aren't about perfection — they're about intention. Slow, thin coats always beat a rushed thick one."

Pro Tips

01

Pull the brush toward you, not away — you have more control that way.

02

Wobbles look artistic; erasing them looks messy. Let them be.

03

Try black liner on a white base for a very different but equally easy look.

Answered

Frequently Asked

Do I need a special brush?+

Any fine-tipped liner works. The dollar store versions in the nail aisle are surprisingly good.

Can I do this on toes?+

Yes, and it looks amazing with sandals. Scale the lines up slightly since toenails have more surface.
